“On the day my little girl came into the world, her father was the first to hold her. He recited the call to prayer in her ear, gave her a name he had long carried in his heart with longing and hope. He looked into her eyes, smiled… and then departed this world a martyr.

Yes, birth and death came together within mere hours.

My daughter was born to the sound of her father’s voice, and he bid her farewell to the sound of her first cry. On that same day, I received her birth certificate… along with his death certificate.”

Amal Sobeih, Yahya’s Wife and Mother to their newborn Sana

On Wednesday, May 7, 2025, our beloved colleague and photojournalist, Yahya Sobeih, was martyred in Gaza. Since 2014, his lens captured the raw, unfiltered truth giving voice to the pain, resilience, and humanity of his people. His brutal, senseless killing came just hours after the birth of his baby, Sana.

Surrounded by family and friends in celebration, he was killed by an Israeli airstrike on a restaurant full of civilians. His brother-in-law, celebrating with Yahya, was killed too following his wife, Yahya’s sister, who was killed last year. Yahya, like many Gazans, lost many members of his family due to the ongoing genocide.

In a single moment, his lens went silent. But the people he loved most, his wife Amal, and their children Baraa, Kenan, and newborn Sana, are still in Gaza. Trapped. Grieving. Struggling to survive under daily bombardment, siege, and constant evacuation orders.

We are urgently raising $50,000 to help Amal and her three children survive. Every donation, big or small, will make a meaningful impact on their lives. The money made will be given directly to his wife, Amal Sobeih so they can:

Afford food, water, and safe shelter

Access emergency supplies for the newborn

Begin to rebuild a life after unbearable loss

Yahya was also the photographer behind the 360° footage featured in our VR Project, the Phoenix of Gaza, captured in Gaza during the current genocide. His work allows the world to witness not only the destruction but the deep personal losses felt by those who remain. He also captured the resilience of those who insist on not leaving and extracting life out of genocide.

Yahya spent over a decade documenting stories the world would have never seen. He believed the world needed to see the truth, even if it cost him his life.

And it did.

This fundraiser is organized by Amber and the Gaza XR team, who worked closely with Yahya. He was our lead photographer and dear friend. His footage lives on in our project but more urgently, so does his family’s need.

We are speaking on Amal’s behalf as she navigates grief and crisis. Every dollar raised will be delivered to her safely through trusted, secure channels.

Together, we can make sure Yahya’s family is not forgotten and help them survive this unimaginable loss. Thank you for your generosity and for being a part of this important cause.

“Today, I deliver the news…tomorrow, I may become it. This is life in Gaza.” – Yahya Sobeih
